Formed in San Francisco in 1977, Noh Mercy was comprised of only two women: Esmerelda and Tony Hotel. The band's motto was 'No Boys On Guitars' as a reaction against male-dominated rock 'n' roll. They didn't need boys or guitars. They harnessed the angularity of Devo, the punk/poet attitude of Patti Smith, and the art spectacle of Roxy Music, all ground down to a minimalist core of voice and drums. Their only two previously released songs, No Caucasian Guilt and Revolutionary Spy, have long been considered essential recordings within Post-Punk/No Wave collector circles and by fans of other late 70's 'girl' groups, such as X-Ray Spex, The Slits, and The Raincoats. This album contains almost entirely unreleased material, unheard for over thirty years. Recorded by Fluxus artist and electronics genius Tommy Tadlock (Tuxedomoon) during their peak in 1979. As prescient as bands come, Noh Mercy preceded the defiant queer rebellion of Riot Grrrl and the frenetic art minimalism of the early 21st century by decades.
Noh Mercy was a fixture of the San Francisco punk scene for a few years in the late 1970s. They are a female duo, featuring Tony Hotel on drums and Esmerelda as the lead singer.
More than 30 years ago, Noh Mercy recorded an album that was never released - though two of their songs from that recording session ("No Caucasian Guilt" and "Revolutionary Spy") ended up on a record compilation that came out in Britain on Fast Records. The rest of their songs could only be found in the memories of the fans who saw them live, before they broke up in 1980.
Until now, that is. Superior Viaduct has released the 10 songs from their recording session as well as four live recordings from a 1979 show at the Catalyst nightclub in Santa Cruz. To celebrate, Noh Mercy is reuniting for a record release show this weekend at Cafe Du Nord.
"There didn't used to be girls like us," Esmerelda says. "Now there's a whole generation of girls that dress wild and are gender bending."
Esmerelda came from a cabaret and performance art background. Hotel performed in jazz bands and attended Berklee College of Music. The music was angry. It was a way for Esmerelda to deal with being pissed off at her father and husband.
"It was a way to rage and say f- you for the pain I went through," she says.
After two years of performing, Noh Mercy broke up. "Drugs and alcoholism escalated it," Esmerelda says, "and it had to end. It was unsustainable."
On New Year's Eve 1979, Esmerelda says she had a vision that something was coming and she would need all of her faculties to deal with it. She kicked the drugs that evening and alcohol soon after. Then, in 1981, a friend died of complications of AIDS - the first of many. She has been sober ever since.
Esmerelda says she's is in a completely different headspace than in the days of Noh Mercy, and she wants to make something clear: Sunday's show "is going to be a re-creation of the ranting of two twentysomething sexually dysphoric women in their Saturn return."
They were in a lot of pain and doing a lot of drugs, she says. It's going to be "an acting feat to get back to the hostility and rage."
"Some of it I don't think I can do because that level of anger is so jarring to the psyche," Esmerelda says. "What I'm into now is to be peaceful and compassionate. This is a time capsule, a moment in time."
And, there's no way they could play that fast again.
