Emerging as a great pop vocal stylist in 1954, Nat King Cole enjoyed a string of hit singles and albums thereon, but Unforgettable is perhaps the singer at his early peak. With romance as the watchword, Cole slides through some of his most familiar ballads, include the title selection, "Portrait of Jennie," "Mona Lisa," and "I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons)." There are quite a few lesser known, but attractive songs, plus a small handful of standards ("What'll I Do?" is a keeper) that round out this interesting collection. The very artistic, near surreal three-dimensional white, charcoal black, and royal blue-hued front cover may be the best part of this reissue, as it reflects a time period defined by its simplicity and yet its increasingly technological, superimposed modernity.Review by Michael G. Nat King Cole scored a number 12 hit in February 1952 with the ballad "Unforgettable," and Capitol Records celebrated by issuing his first compilation album in the LP format, that is, the 10" LP format, with room for eight songs. In addition to "Unforgettable," these included four other chart singles: "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" (number one, 1946), "Mona Lisa" (number one, 1950), "Too Young" (number one, 1951), and "Red Sails in the Sunset" (number 24, 1951), plus a B-side ("Lost April"), a non-chart single ("A Portrait of Jennie," 1950), and an old standard (Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?"). The disc thus didn't quite qualify as a complete set of Cole's biggest hits as of 1952 (in particular, it was missing "Nature Boy"), but with three chart-toppers and one of his real signature songs in the title track it was arguably a strong collection. In 1955, with the 12" LP supplanting the 10" format as the popular size for an album, Capitol issued a beefed-up version of Unforgettable by adding two songs to either side of the disc. "Answer Me, My Love" (number six, 1954) and "Hajji Baba (Persian Lament)" (number 14, 1954) were appended onto the end of Side One, and "Pretend" (number two, 1953) and "Make Her Mine" (number 19, 1954) went onto the end of Side Two. This made the album even more of a hits collection, if still incomplete due to Cole's numerous chart successes. [For a 2007 CD reissue, mail-order firm Collectors' Choice Music added four more tracks to Unforgettable, thus doubling the original eight-song version. These were rarities rather than more hits. "You Weren't There" was a non-charting 1952 single. "The Magic Tree" was the B-side of the 1951 chart single "Jet." "Paint Yourself a Rainbow," recorded in 1950, first appeared on a single in the U.K. And "My First and My Last Love" was the B-side of "Unforgettable."
