Every Time I Feel the Spirit is a 1959 studio album by Nat King Cole, of spirituals, arranged by Gordon Jenkins. Cole is accompanied by the First Church of Deliverance Choir of Chicago, Illinois. The album was re-issued by Capitol Records in 1966 under the new title, Nat King Cole Sings Hymns and Spirituals. Several bonus tracks, recorded between 1951 and 1961 and arranged by Nelson Riddle and others, were added to later CD re-issues.
I have always appreciated the unaffected atmosphere and astute artistry of gospel music, and in the early 1960s I bought a copy of the World Records Club LP titled `Nat King Cole Sings Spirituals'. Quality suffered as it was played so frequently and it disappeared into a cupboard as CDs took over. I was delighted to come across this recently released CD `Every Time I Feel The Spirit' and listen again to Nat's scintillating and sincere spirituals. The original LP contained 12 short numbers and all have been repeated on this CD plus what are referred to as 6 bonus tracks. These are pleasant enough (typical Nat King Cole plus more orchestration than for simple spirituals) but it is the original 12 numbers that without doubt grant 5-star status. One of these `I Found The Answer' was composed independently, but the other 11 are traditional spirituals with blues influence, and are arranged by Nat King Cole and Gordon Jenkins the conductor of the choir of Chicago's First Church of Deliverance. Each one is a marvellous and inspired authentic example of this form of music as both Nat and the choir treat them with the dedication and devotion they deserve. My favourites include the opening title track `Every Time I Feel The Spirit' together with `I Want To Be Ready', `Standin' In The Need Of Prayer', `Go Down Moses' and `I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray', and my most favoured favourite is `Oh Mary Don't You Weep'. Listen to the pulse and intonation of the Hammond organ and the passionate support and syncopated clapping of the church choir - this track alone makes for a 5-star CD. I cannot better the sleeve note of my LP: "Nat King Cole's great warmth and sincerity perfectly capture the moods of joy and sadness as he lifts his voice in praise to sing twelve great spirituals."Review by D. On paper, a gospel album by preacher's son Nat King Cole recorded in his hometown of Chicago with a local church choir would seem like a sure thing. Why then is Every Time I Feel the Spirit such a disappointment? The blame cannot be put on the First Church of Deliverance Choir, which gives strong readings of some excellent spirituals, including "Ain't Gonna Study War No More," "Oh, Mary, Don't You Weep," and "I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray." It must be ascribed to Cole himself, who sounds like he is overdubbing his part (though this apparently was not the case), especially because there seems to be no connection between him and the choir. Cole simply sings in his usual easygoing, well-articulated style, never seeming particularly involved with the songs' messages. He swings, but he never works up a sweat and gets soulful. For this reason, the best numbers are the slow ones like "Go Down, Moses" and "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen," on which he can at least seem reverent.
