    EAC Rip | Flac, IMG+Cue, Log | 4 CD | 1.2 GB | Full Scans | WinRar [rec. rec 5%]
Label: Music & Arts | Cat. No. M&A799 | Released 1993 | Beethoven · Mozart · Schubert · Brahms | Isaac Stern, Efrem Kurtz, Adrian Boult usw.

It was on November 14, 1907, that Hess's official debut took place at Queen's Hall. Accompanying the seventeen-year-old pianist was a conductor named Thomas [not yet Sir Thomas] Beecham. Many years later Hess described the event as "a concert of stupendous length. I played two concertos [Beethoven's Fourth and the Saint-Saëns Fourth] and a group of solos while he [Beecham] seemed to contribute a full-sized orchestra program."

Myra Hess: The Legendary Public Performances · 1949-1960 [4 CD set][Re-POST]

In several respects the war years represented both the busiest and most significant period of Hess's career. It was she, together with Sir Kenneth Clark [director of the National Gallery] who instituted the daily lunch hour concerts in the gallery to which thousands of Londoners flocked for the duration of the conflict. Over 1700 concerts were presented: Myra Hess took part in about 150 of them, appearing as soloist, in chamber music, and in a series encompassing all the Mozart concertos. As her colleague Howard Ferguson described it, "Myra's dream of providing music daily for whoever wished to hear it became a practical reality…. Music lovers of every description, cevilian and service, came either regularly or whenever they could find an opportunity. And many who had never in their lives thought of listening to serious music dropped in by chance, enjoyed what they heard [often to their surprise] and returned again and again. Public gratitude for all that Myra had done and stood for, as well as for her unique contribution as a pianist, found expression in a variety of ways." [OBE in 1941, Gold medal of the Royal Philharmonic Soc., honorary doctorates from 7 British universities]
