A revolutionary treatment of one of the "sacred cows" of the opera repertoire. Daniel Barenboim, who here conducts, invited Munich film director Doris Dorrie to produce Cosi fan tutte for the Staatsoper Berlin in 2002, and the resulting project drew plaudits from die-hard Mozart fans as well as introducing a whole new generation to the opera genre.
Dorrie, long established on the German cinema scene as a master of comic genius, chose to stage her Cosi in the 1970s when the Flower Power revolution was in full swing. A stage bedecked with giant flowers and costumes as colourful as the music provide the background for this "hippie musical" under the motto: "To cheat on your partner or not, that is the question."
"The story makes sense in a Seventies context. It was a time when you could be accused of procuring if you were shameless enough to let your daughter stay with a male school friend overnight. But it was also a time of rebellion against this outmoded morality."
