The first the world heard of Mortiis was his bassplaying in the norweigian BM band Emperor. With them he released "Wrath of the Tyrant" demo, "Emperor" Mini album, "As the Shadows Rise" 7". After that he decided to start a solo project, simply called Mortiis.Track Listing
The first work released was the demotape "The songs of a long forgotten ghost" in 1993. The recordcompany Malicious records got hold of the tape and released "Født til å herske" later that year. The sound shocked the metalcrowd who expected something alike to the sound of his work with Emperor. Instead they heard a type of music that was quite diffrent to what they had heard before with synths and a very "mystical" sound. Mortiis was now only 18 years old and moved to Halmstad in Sewden.
Having discovered the virtue of tunes, he crammed his second full length album The Smell of Rain with pounding melodies that bring to mind everyone from Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails through to the chanting choirs of Enigma. With the MTV-friendly likes of "Parasite God," "You Put a Hex On Me," and "Smell the Witch" casting their industrial spell, Mortiis soon found himself a superstar on the alternative goth scene.
Personal Note: This album is a huge favorite of mine. Quite unlike his earlier avatar with Emperor, this solo work has a very atmospheric and melodic feel to it with audible lyrics and great non-metal guitar riffs. Enjoy this and if you get the urge to break stuff after listening to this, dont!
