Morbid Angel is a very interesting band… They’ve had their ups and downs during their career, but though it all they’ve always remained one of the more well-received death metal bands out there (and deservedly so…). Most purists will argue that the band hit its low point when Dave Vincent left the band, but in actuality the material was getting a bit stale by his last two albums with the band, DOMINATION and the live ENTANGLED IN CHAOS.Tracklist :
COVENANT captures the band at the height of its creativity, and I would argue that it’s their last brilliant album (although FORMULAS FATAL TO THE FLESH is also pretty amazing). David Vincent gives a credible performance with his rasping vocals (an improvement over his work on the band’s first album, but not as good as the one on BLESSED ARE THE SICK, if that makes any sense whatsoever). I would also say that the music is slightly faster than mid-tempo, although that might be pushing it on some songs. Even so, it works quite well…
“Rapture” is a very good opening track, and it basically sets the tone for the rest of the album… Trey Azagthoth’s guitars sound really good here and part of the reason why the album works so well is that the riffs sound really sinister… Just try listening to “World of Shit” and telling me that it doesn’t sound fucking evil… One of the real standouts of the album is the dynamic “The Lion’s Den.” There’s some seriously awesome riffage on that track, and the guitar solo there is fantastic.
“Angel of Disease” is probably the best (and also longest) song on the album, with its multiple guitar solos being a highlight… Of course, it wouldn’t be a Morbid Angel album (well, sort of) without an ominous track of eerie keyboards preceding something really epic, and that’s what we get with “Nar Mattaru…” pure horror movie atmosphere, folks, and it works very well given the context of the music. This brings us to the utterly unique final track on the album, “God of Emptiness.” This is what I love about Morbid Angel… they’re never satisfied by going down the beaten path… The track starts off sounding like your average Morbid Angel track but then, out of nowhere this wicked voice starts reciting evil incantations over the slow grind of the guitars… Standard clichéd death metal “Bow to me!” stuff but, get this, it’s actually pretty cool…
That’s the thing with Morbid Angel… they take a potentially campy premise and they manage to pull it off with the utmost conviction. This is one of the band’s best albums, and its’ recommended to death metal aficionados out there…You know who you are.
