О. Messiaen's "Vingt regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus" (Twenty-four Looks at the Child Jesus) which became a land-mark in the composer's career was written in 1945.Tracklist:
The composing technique of "Looks' is a fine alloy of devices borrowed from different — both in historical and aesthetical sense — artistic systems: ancient Indian rhythms and ancient Greek poetical metrics, Gregorian chants and oriental modes, medieval symbolism of colour and numbers; we also find in this work artistic embodiment of modern micro — and macrophysics and ornithology. All this creates an extremely exotic atmosphere of music, rich in colourful timbres, elegant rhythmical patterns and orchestral associations with oriental instruments; sound fabric is punctuated with imitations of bird-song.
The cycles dramaturgy is built on "through" thematic material, structurally different, but constant and recognizable as far as intonation is concerned. One of such themes is "the theme of God" which is pivotal to the work's concept. In constantly alternating pieces, contrasting in their mood, emerge poetical images, plots and symbols of the Old and New Testament.
