Olivier Messiaen (b. 1908) — one of the major contemporary composers — is by rights regarded to be a 20th-century classic. Among Messiaen's pupils are K. Stockhausen, P. Boulez, I. Xenakis whose names are associated with the extreme musical avant-garde of the second half of our century. Yet works by Messiaen himself belong to the traditional musical art. This is explained 1st of all by the composer's ethical outlook which is deeply rooted in the traditions of Christian-Catholic culture. As Messiaen says his compositions carry the message of theological truths & Catholic faith: "This is the loftiest & undoubtedly, the most serious, natural & probably the only aspect of my creative work which I won't regret even in my dying hour". Among such works is the grandiose cycle "Vingt regards sur I'Enfant-Jesus" (24 Looks at the Child Jesus) (1945) which became a land-mark in the composers career.Tracklist:
