Free and avant-garde jazz are catch-all genres in which Matthew Shipp has dug his hole. Since the dawn of the 90s, the pianist settled in New York has mainly sought and found his voice. Because, as he has always said, "by living in my time, I can not be John Coltrane or Sun Ra. I need to develop something new, in tune with today's world. Some have consistently described him as Cecil Taylor's spiritual son. A reductive parentage, Shipp playing with textures and tones differently than his elder. As with his ingestible sisters Marilyn Crispell and Myra Melford, his piano is drunk from various sources, is not exclusively percussive and sometimes eyeing Bud Powell, Andrew Hill or Herbie Nichols … He proves it once again on this album in trio with bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Newman Taylor Baker. Recorded in one take in July 2018, Signature is an impeccable rodeo impromptu trip. A zone of turbulence of one hour in which everything flies away while the three pilots hold the course firmly. Besides, Shipp and his rhythms tell so much that a single listening is not enough to savor everything.
