"The Great Journey" is Colin Matthews' largest vocal work, running to nearly forty minutes. It is a setting of a condensation of the report by Alvar Nu-ez Cabeza de Vaca (c 1490 - c 1560) to Emperor Charles V. Cabeza de Vaca was part of a ill-planned Spanish expedition seeking the legendary (and unsubstantiated) treasures of Florida. The expedition shipwrecked. Left for dead in the swampy land, he was rescued by and lived among the Indians. He found three other stranded Spaniards. Together they made an incredible journey back to Spanish territory, travelling through totally unknown lands from Florida to Mexico, arriving at Spanish settlements nine years after their fleet left Spain. Along the way, Cabeza de Vaca gained an understanding of and respect for the local populations and later became perhaps the most humane of all the Spanish governors of the Americas during this period. He suffered for that, being called back to Spain, tried, and imprisoned.Tracks:
The fourteen numbers of this cantata for baritone and orchestra are grouped into four movements telling the story. The text is from Cabeza de Vaca's own account (except for a conclusory passage of imagined narrative regarding his imprisonment). The music makes extensive use of music by Fernando Franco (c 1520-1585), a Spaniard who spent the last thirty years of his life as a composer in Mexico and Guatamala and is given a historical position as Mexico's first composer. The first two sections tell of the shipwreck and near death, while the other two sections narrate the voyage. A partial performance was given in 1983. The first full performance, sung by David Wilson Johnson with the Nash Ensemble, was in June, 1988.
