The overarching themes of this interesting collection of French Baroque concerts royaux and cantatas are war and peace. Composers Montéclair and Clérambault evoke the sounds of war with symphonies of trumpets, fifes and drums, and a mood of peace with the dulcet tones of musettes. Martin Gester and his ensemble Le Parlement de Musique offer colorful and incisive performances of this fascinating repertoire. Both the title work, Montéclair s Le Retour de la paix and Clérambault s cantata L isle de Délos feature the exciting young soprano Dorothée Leclair.

    Composer: Michel Monteclair, Louis-Nicolas Clérambault
    Performer: Martin Gester, Dorothée Leclair
    Conductor: Martin Gester
    Orchestra/Ensemble: Le Parlement de Musique

Reviews: The beginning of the 18th century was a time when the splendor of Louis XIV and the musical dictatorship of Jean-Baptiste Lully were both on the decline. The royal court, of course, felt this as a slow devolution, while Lully’s attempt to create a familial sinecure unraveled almost immediately after his death in 1689, since his progeny had little or no musical talent or political savvy to maintain the position. This left the field open to others, and in a time where the rhetorical passions of the arts of the Sun King were giving way to a more dramatic and intimate expression, composers sought to bring music into a more descriptive and accessible realm. One of these was Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667–1737), whose opera Jephté from 1732 demonstrated to Rameau at least that the French grand operatic style could adapt to the more modern requirements. His colleague Louis Nicolas Cléramboult (1676–1749) was cut from the same cloth, opting to enter the musical debate over static convention versus modern evolution on the same side. Although mainly known as an organist, he entered into the active musical life of Paris by writing sets of works that reflected the latest trends, such as violin sonatas or topical cantatas. Thus it is natural that these two composers be put together in such a disc as this.

This idea, however, is not a new one. In 1999 much of the Montéclair cantata was released on Dynamic with Gabriele Cassone, while bits and pieces also appear with Emma Kirkby and the London Baroque on a recent BIS release, with other portions of both on Koch with the American Baroque ensemble. In other words, with the exception perhaps of the cantata L’Isle de Délos , the music has already been recorded and those versions I have listened to are equally as well done as this disc. There is, however, a wonderful touch of the fashion of the time here, especially in the rather strident opening march from the Fifth Concerto for flute and other instruments from the 1724 collection by Montéclair, or the lovely, lilting aria “Durez toujours” from the Clérambault cantata. In the former’s cantata, the final “Air des trompètes et musètes” includes a really neat hurdy-gurdy imitation, while the “Mélange” from the divertissement incorporates the real thing along with appropriately outdoorsy natural trumpets. It should all be rousing enough as an alternative to the often academic performance by the London Baroque. As for the vocalist, Dorothée Leclair is hailed in the notes as an “exciting new discovery.” That may be, but I find her somewhat throaty at times, not quite sure of how French ornamentation seems to operate, given that there are some tentative moments. But the Clérambault cantata is quite well sung, and she seems to have hit her stride there. One may not be quite as excited about her being discovered in this disc, but there is talent there, and I am certain that with continued exposure she has the capability to become a good interpreter of the genre (based of course upon my not having heard her recordings of La Pellegrina and Les Ballets des arts , or the Couperin Leçons for that matter). I will look forward to her development. The ensemble seems deftly led by Martin Gester, who keeps things very lively and in the manner of the period. In short, the disc is quite interesting and well worthwhile if you don’t already have the works in your collection.
