Martin Rev's 50's-like melodic minimal duplex epics in Strangeworld wouldn't sound out-of-place in a David Lynch film. Whether it's the boiling beats of Splinters or the surfer groove on Trouble there are fascinating gems here. The drum machine on Chalky sounds like is it increasingly being drowned as the track progresses. The rhythm machine tortured as if it was a living animal (beat beat.. beat beat..) at the deep end of a swimming pool (like he tortured the 'Instrument' - the Farfisa - on his band Suicide's debut album opener Ghostrider). Through much of Strangeworld Rev's voice is processed as if through a storm of elements; some thicker than blood, others lighter than a spirit. ~scott-r
