Composed for the 1744 celebrations at Drottningholm Palace of the marriage between the Swedish crown prince Adolf Fredrik and Lovisa Ulrika of Prussia, Johan Helmich Roman's Drottningholm Music is a key work in Swedish art music. Consisting of 24 individual movements, it forms an inventory of short pieces suitable for providing the proper musical ambience for the royal celebrations, which took place over four days. As befitted the occasion, the character of the music is buoyant and witty, and when the atmosphere occasionally veers away from the carefree, it is towards a graceful melancholy rather than grief or pain. This also conforms to the spirit of the time, as does the style of the music itself: varied and brimming with ideas, but never weighed down by dry learnedness or disproportionate displays of emotion. Roman had spent formative years in London in the 1710s, and in the 1730s made a long journey throughout Europe, absorbing the new, ‘galant' currents in music. Although by 1744 he was suffering from failing health, he was at his peak as a composer, and in this sparkling and joyful music he demonstrates both his innate talent and the impressions gathered from music by composers such as Sammartini and Leonardo Leo. The work is performed by Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, guided by Andrew Manze, the orchestra's principal conductor and one of the world's leading specialists on baroque music.

The notes include a vivid account of the lavish celebrations surrounding the Swedish royal marriage in 1744 for which Johan Helmich Roman provided these two dozen short movements.

They range from full orchestra with trumpets, horns and drums in Handelian grandeur, to gentle moments for strings with flute, oboe, and in one case bassoon obbligato.

This was not music for close, attentive listening but intended rather to provide aural enhancement of many parts of two days’ feasting and dancing. It’s best heard a few movements at a time rather than as a continuous 70-minute programme.

Roman’s music teems with ideas, all delightful and inventive, though easily forgotten as they pass quickly by rather than being worked out in long structures – 16 of the movements last under three minutes.

They’re beautifully played. Andrew Manze has passed on his outstanding experience in early-music techniques to the modern instruments of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, with crisply bowed strings, transparent articulation and phrasing, and at times revealing some remarkable colours – the wide-ranging tonal palette of solo oboe (track 2), for example.

BIS, among the most committed champions of surround-sound, use simple stereo here. But detailed balance and the impression of Helsingborg Concert Hall’s spaciousness are excellent, nonetheless.

Review by George Pratt, BBC Music Magazine

Johan Helmich Roman's Drottningholm music consists of 24 numbers (and one da capo), totaling about 70 minutes in these lively performances. It's about what you'd expect for a baroque wedding (1744), and perhaps the nearest equivalent would be Handel's Water Music. Scored for the standard ensemble of the day (strings, winds, trumpets and drums, plus harpsichord continuo), it's easy to imagine the royal couple having a grand time, or at least being consistently entertained.

Andrew Manze directs as exciting a performance as we might expect from someone so thoroughly versed in period performance practice. Happily, he's also got a real orchestra playing on decent instruments, and the result gives you the best of both worlds: authenticity of style, but all the advantages of modern instruments in terms of timbre. And let's not kid ourselves anymore: modern instruments sound better. Not "different"–better, by anyone's definition, and by any standard. The engineering is warm, well-balanced, and utterly appealing, like the music itself. Easily recommendable.
