Kora, guitar and tabla come together in unity when Mamadou Diabate, Jeff Lang and Bobby Singh play to an astonishingly beautiful and surprisingly natural recording that displays the conversational and virtuosic style that all three are renowned for. Highly recommended.
Seriously, don't do it. The temptation is strong, but there isn't a hint of new age wankery here. Yes, this is an African + Indian + blues meld, and while that sounds like a formula for the kind of thing you hear in the background in establishments that traffic in pointless tchotchkes and pseudoscientific practices, there is none of that here.
The group consists of Malian kora player Mamadou Diabate, the less famous but equally talented cousin of Toumani, tabla player Bobby Singh, and my all-time favorite blues-based guitarist, Jeff Lang. Lang is one of my musical heroes– a true visionary with the kind of instrumental chops that make people with a legitimate claim to the title of "virtuoso" want to bash their instruments against the wall out of shame and frustration. He sticks primarily to Weissenborn here, and his lap slide playing has always had a tinge of Indian to it, so his connection to this project makes perfect sense. African sounds are a less common component of Lang's music, but just listen to his appearance on Vieux Farka Toure's recent live album, and you'll understand his connection to Malian music too (incidentally, Vieux is Ali Farka's son, and just as cool). Mamadou Diabate has been on my radar screen since he released Tunga more than a decade ago, and he deserves just as much attention as his older cousin. The blues influence is particularly prominent in Diabate's playing, so his participation in this project also makes perfect sense. Bobby Singh was the wild card for me here since I had never heard of him. Indian music just isn't my thing most of the time. I'm a big Harry Manx fan, though, so the idea melding blues with Indian music makes sense to me. The danger is that Indian-fusion type stuff is one of the most direct routes to aromatherapy shop background music. Fortunately, Bobby Singh has some fire in him. He winds up being the glue that holds this album together. The album winds its way back and forth through Indian and Malian sounds, with Lang's blues feeling mostly providing an undertone. However, what separates this album from other attempts at similar mixes is that the music always keeps a bit of an ominous, creepy darkness that is sure to keep away new agers. This is because neither Lang nor Diabate are afraid of minor keys, dissonance or a ragged instrumental attack. The balance of serene beauty and unsettling tension just beneath the surface keeps things in tight focus.
So, how does this compare to the obvious points of reference? The most obvious are two of Bob Brozman's collaborations– the one with kora player Djeli Moussa Diawara, and the one with Indian slide master Debashish Bhattacharya. Djan Djan compares very favorably to both. The Brozman/Diawara album is a classic, and Djan Djan sounds a lot like what this would have been with a tabla player along for the ride, and no vocals. (Incidentally, Lang did a great collaboration with Brozman). I actually prefer this one to the Brozman/Bhattacharya collaboration. I just don't appreciate Indian style singing, so the fact that Djan Djan is purely instrumental suits me better.
What about the Ry Cooder/V.M. Bhatt collaboration? I have a ton of respect for Ry, but let's be honest– that one got a little new-agey at times, unlike his collaboration with Ali Farka Toure, which is another useful reference point for Djan Djan.
Further listening: It is a different mix, but if you haven't heard it yet, check out Afrocubism. It is a collaboration between several Cuban and Malian musicians, most importantly guitar virtuosos Djelimady Tounkara and Eliades Ochoa, and Mamadou's cousin, Toumani, that was originally supposed to be the basis for Buena Vista Social Club. At least we have it now. Also, check out Tri-Continental.
WARNING: While I recommend this album strongly, if you are getting the cd, make sure you get the full 10-track version. They released a 5-track version in 2008, and if you aren't careful, you might wind up with that one.Review by Nobody important, Amazon.com
