I highly recommend this to fans of Bartók and Bacewicz, but this is only a simplistic basis of comparison - Maconchy's musical language is not as derivative of these composers as the comparison might suggest. To simplify, as with the other mentioned composers, this is "tough-but-tonal" music. The booklet for this set is superb; it contains seperate notes on each composition written by the composer, and also a small essay on her philosophy for writing for the string quartet form. Booklet notes as useful as this are sadly uncommon. If you love this music enough, please consider supporting the labels who publish her!
