Love were one of the most extraordinary bands to emerge from Los Angeles during one of the most remarkable periods in music, the dawn of the rock era in the mid ‘60s. Led by the colourful and charismatic Arthur Lee, they made only three albums in their original incarnation and were revered by many of their fellow LA musicians, including their label mates The Doors.This 2 CD compilation includes the best of their albums Love, Da Capo and Four Sail (the last featuring Lee as the only original member), and their masterpiece Forever Changes in its entirety.

Having already undertaken comprehensive reissue campaigns for the likes of Slade and Nazareth, UK specialist label Salvo now turn their attentions to Rhino Records, and with this release they make a fine attempt at recreating the spirit around the time of the initial Summer of Love just as Britain readies itself for another winter of discontent.
‘Love Songs’ then is a double disc compilation of Arthur Lee’s psychedelic trailblazers Love, based on a compilation originally released by Rhino back in 1995, and for anyone who is looking for an almost perfect introduction to the band’s initial five studio albums (encompassing tracks from their 1966 self titled album up to their 1970 swan song ‘False Start’) then look no further than this baby, because this is exactly what you are looking for. Taking their early sound from the likes of country rock superstars The Byrds, I have always felt that Love offered slightly more for the rock fan than Roger McGuinn and co bringing as they did a more rhythm and blues based guitar rock to the mix, whilst in the process also being attributed to having invented punk rock via their turbo charged ‘Seven And Seven Is’. Jimi Hendrix almost certainly recognised the rock credentials of Lee (the two being long standing friends) and his six string contribution to the track ‘The Everlasting First’ which comes from the band’s fifth album ‘False Start’ which closes the first CD of ‘Love Songs’ will be of particular interest to many people dipping their toes on the waters of Love for the very first time.
My own introduction to the genius of Love came via a cover of ‘Alone Again Or’ which was on UFO’s ‘Lights Out’ album, a song that would also be covered by The Damned later on, so you can probably see where I’m going when I tell you that Love’s seminal third album ‘Forever Changes’ (from which said song is taken) is thankfully included in its entirety on the second disc of ‘Love Songs’. The ten tracks that make up ‘Forever Changes’ are probably the most perfect distillation of 1967 you’ll find anywhere on planet Uber Rock even if the heavy drug use that surrounded its recording was also the start of the end for the band You cannot help but marvel at songs like ‘The Red Telephone’ and wonder if perhaps Love and a certain Pink Floyd might have been sharing more than just the same dealer back in the mid to late sixties. Likewise the ‘Forever Changes’ 2001 reissue cut ‘(Wonder People) I Do Wonder’ is a joyous orchestral pop workout that Burt Bacharach himself would have been proud to have penned, something that has a certain degree of irony about it as it is his track ‘My Little Red Book’ (written with Hal David) that actually opens this collection.
When someone like Robert Plant openly declares Arthur Lee to be a god amongst men you know he had something very special to offer, and this 37 track compilation is as good a place to start as any for those of you who may not have experienced the likes of ‘Singing Cowboy’ a song that pretty much single handedly helped shape the aforementioned ex Zep man’s vocal stylings for years to come.
