Les Pléiades - Beethoven & Schönberg (2020)

Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony (1808) and Verklärte Nacht by Arnold Schönberg (1899) are two major musical works each at the end of the romantic arc that the 19th century built and are linked by two strong themes: nature and modernity. With the Pastoral Symphony, Beethoven describes the deep feelings that Nature inspires in Man. As soon as the work was published, Michael Gotthard Fischer (1773-1829), organist and composer, delivered his transcription for
string sextet to the public of European salons.

Arnold Schönberg chooses the formation of the string sextet for his own qualities: three duets of instruments (2 violins, two violas, two cellos) are deployed in the writing made of new and sophisticated combinations.
Illustrating the poem of Richard Dehmel (1886-1920), "Verklärte Nacht", extracted from the collection "Woman and the world", Arnold Schönberg composes an incredible masterpiece which turns out to be a painting of human torments; Nature is the theater.
