Laurence Perkins, The New London Orchestra, Ronald Corp - The Playful Pachyderm (2004)

This disc, well-recorded in 2003 by Hyperion, brings together a totally delightful collection of well-known and not so well-known classic miniatures for bassoon and orchestra. Most of these 18 pieces last between 3.5 and 6.5 minutes and it is a tribute to both them and the players that the listener's attention is maintained throughout.
Laurence Perkins has been an active solo bassoonist for many years and has spent much time involved with chamber music and with educational projects to do with the bassoon. The orchestra on this disc is a 'period' orchestra and was founded by Ronald corp in 1988 since when it has made a number of successful light music records for Hyperion. Most, if not all, of the music on this disc falls perfectly within the time scope of this orchestra.
There is a strong sense of pleasure radiating from the players throughout this disc which includes favourites such as Lucy Long, My Teddybear, and Der alte Brummbar by Fucik. Many of the pieces have folk song links such as attractive The Mist-Covered Mountains, and many have been deftly arranged by Perkins. All the pieces chosen for this disc have been well selected and make for enjoyable repeat listening.
I would suggest that for those who might find this program of interest it would be hard to imagine it being better played or recorded. At the moment it is totally unique as a collection or concept.
