With their new album Live From The Apocalypse, which is available June 25 via Century Media, Italy’s gothic metal torchbearers Lacuna Coil have captured an intriguing—and ultimately elevating—spotlight of life in the music community amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The compelling record contains a livestreamed performance that Lacuna Coil put on from the Alcatraz Club in Milan, Italy, back in September of 2020. Vocalist Cristina Scabbia references viewers in the course of the record—although there are, of course, no immediate responses, since there was no actual crowd physically present, distinguishing this album from other live recordings.

Lacuna Coil, however, deliver a nonetheless impressive and powerful performance, reaching such an intensity that they sound as though they’re beckoning listeners, wherever they may be located, to join in the journey upon which the band have embarked.

The drama contained within these songs, bolstered by the booming tones of Lacuna Coil’s live sound, suggests some particularly fantastical trek, as though stepping into a woodland environment of battles and triumph once diving into the record. Alternatively, building off the band’s generally grim presentation, one could imagine the journey of Live From The Apocalypse as a carnival-ride-like trek through shadowy and ominously threatening realms that sit outside our own.

Most of the songs that are included here appear on the group’s 2019 full-length record Black Anima, so the range mirrors what that album contains. Lacuna Coil smoothly veer from more contemplatively inclined moments—like the piano and vocals-led rendition of “Save Me” that closes this new record—to punchy rhythms and even explosive bombast, suggesting regality.

Throughout the experience, Lacuna Coil remain heavy and intense, performing with thick guitars that sound poised to carve chunks out of the earth alongside similarly impactful, accompanying instrumentation.

Meanwhile, Scabbia sings with captivatingly theatrical drama, smoothly pushing the experience forward, as though somehow soaring through a thunderstorm upon a burst of wind. Overall, the band’s instrumentals also prove relatively polished, without much of a break in the musical currents. Thus, the listening experience is rather immersive. The energy itself is relatively straightforward—which does, of course, seem especially fitting for a live setting like the one reflected on the record.

Getting a chance to take in Live From The Apocalypse in-person when it was performed for the world would have no doubt been enthralling—although that’s certainly not lost in this more distanced format. Lacuna Coil move confidently through these tracks, and their song constructions themselves suggest a similar burst of self-assured determination.

Listening through the record, “Sword Of Anger” starts on a pummelingly heavy note, and “Now Or Never” features another heavy-as-hell opening. Even in these more artfully unstable moments, though, the music feels uplifting—but it does remain generally rather overcast, enacting a sense that there are serious stakes underlying this musical journey.

“Through The Flames” highlights slower drama within the Lacuna Coil sound, although even while exploring the somewhat mournful, reflective vibe, the group remain intense. Thus, the track evokes a sense like watching the fiery destruction of an abandoned palace that once bustled with lively activity. Meanwhile, “The End Is All I Can See,” which appears later, seems ominously uneasy, as though the ground has suddenly begun to inexplicably shift.

Although the music is grandiose, it feels intensely emotional, with overflowing passion clearly evident in the band’s performances. In just about the broadest sense, it’s a cathartically revelatory experience of self-expression. The band sound strikingly personal—and powerful.
