One or two bass viols and basso continuo (harpsichord or organ with|without bass viol and with|without archilute)
August Kühnel was a late seventeenth viol player and composer. He was active at Zeitz court (1661-1665), traveled in Paris in this period, and has also been seen in Dresd, Francfort/Main (1669), Munich (1680-81) and was noticed to be in London in 1682 and 1685 where he played "upon the Barritone".
The 14 sonates are his only known work, and the score was edited at the end of his life, as was the op.1 fromBuxtehude.
Sonatas 1, 2, 5, 7, 8 are intitled "sonatas", sonate 10 is an aria with 9 variations on the chorale "Herr Jesu Christ, du höches Gut" and sonates 11 and 12 are in fact suites of dances.
Freek Bortslap is a gambist from the Hague school of Wieland Kuijken and worth being known. This CD is the only I know entirely devoted to August Kühnel (feedback welcome).
