This first installment in a complete recording of Bach’s flute sonatas (which includes both authenticated and attributed works) is successful in every respect. The diffuse recording has spaciousness and warmth, the period instruments sound beautifully, and the performers play with character and sensitivity. Reasonable choices of tempos, detailed articulation, and varied continuo (harpsichord, cello, theorbo, organ, and even fortepiano contribute in turn to its realization) constantly help to maintain interest and liveliness. The famous Siciliana of the BWV Sonata 1031 releases a nice melancholy feeling, while the Trio Sonata from the Musical Offering, with the fortepiano playing the violin part in the right hand, shows enough expressivity to convince the listener of the viability of this option even though it loses some color in the process. Bach’s flute sonatas may not count among his masterpieces, but thanks to Karl Kaiser and Musica Alta Ripa’s flexible and thoughtful performances, they will please every Baroque music lover.
