Kalmah triumphantly trumps fellow Finns Children of Bodom and Norther with their latest release "For The Revolution".
As always, the band continues to release music at a steady pace, rarely wavering from the familiar path yet carving their own niche into the overcrowded melodic metal scene. Pekka Kokko turns heads yet again; this time reverting back to his higher pitched screams, contrasting with the familiar gutturals from The Black Waltz. The result is refreshing, and does not grow stale throughout the course of the album.
The modest 9 tracks average at about 5 minutes a piece, and are all chock full of harmonizing goodness. Keyboard Marco Sneck is finally unleashed after a semi-restrained outing on The Black Waltz. He lends plenty of melodic solos and sometimes folky leads to the mix, proving he belongs. The guitarwork is nothing short of amazing, with plenty of almost speed metal moments clashing with slower melodic death cuts such as "Wings of Blackening". The overall pace of the album is midrange, with the only slower track being "Ready For Salvation". Some of the highlights include "Towards The Sky" and "Dead Man's Shadow", which seamlessly blend the catchy keyboards with the heaviness of the guitars. The drumming is fast and precise, but nothing an initiate metalhead hasn't seen before. Timo Lehtinen's basswork is always buzzing around in the background, and lends more of a helping hand than past releases.
The overall sound and atmosphere of the album draws parallels with The Black Waltz, but also delivers a firm nod to the band's older releases. For The Revolution solidifies Kalmah's presence in the Finnish metal scene, and cannot be missed by fans of the band or the genre.
