Judas Priest - Battle Cry (2016)

Bloody brilliant. Again. Priest have been the purist form of heavy metal since it seems the beginning of time and once again have given us another demonstration as to why they have survived for so long. Unlike their last live album this one is more conventional in song choice. A few from their new album - which is very good I may add - a choice selection of the less well played then of course back to the fan favourites. There is a general trend for bands to try out different songs sometimes but truth be told, the reason we want the usual suspects is often they are simply superb. Priest have nicely balanced this record with an injection of the new and less frequent but gone back to the old school bangers. 'Metal Gods,' 'Breaking the Law,' 'Hell Bent for Leather,' 'Hellion and Electric Eye,' etc. By the end of this record I was headbanging like I was 20 years younger. Wife was not amused. Now Wacken is a great choice for a live record because it has become the home of metal and then some. The atmosphere recorded is great and the crowd really get into this. It all helps. Priest are in their element knocking out the greats and the crowd seem to lap it up. Production values are high with a tight crisp sound and a hard edge that emphasises the heavy metal sound. It sounds live too. And yes, I know that it is supposed to be but it's common knowledge that 'live,' albums are often helped along quite a bit. This one has clearly been done with a light touch I assume because Rob Halford sounds excellent for a man at pension age but not quite pitch perfect. That's fine by me because I know that no one can get through an entire concert without sounding a bit 'live,' now and again. The rest of the band are really hammering it out as well. This is one of the heavier live albums Priest have done and I guess that follows the modern trend with better recording and equipment allowing faster, harder sounds without compromising the quality.
