Jonathan Pesek - Farina: Sonate e canzoni (2017)

In the field of instrumental music, Europe in the first half of the 17th century is transformed into a veritable "laboratory" of experimentation. The expressive power of the instruments - based on the art of vocal rhetoric - fascinates composers: to replace the verb, the word which until then has been the summit of learned music, by a purely instrumental but equally savvy poetic Of popular or folkloric instrumentality, gave birth to a new, autonomous repertory, always remote from the vocal polyphonies of the Renaissance. Among the emerging instruments, the violin occupies a special place. Carlo Farina (ca. 1604- 1639) is particularly challenging with the presence of the violinist Salomone Rossi, who witnessed the still palpable echoes of the creation in 1607 of L'Orfeo de Monteverdi. As a violinist, Farina left Italy in 1625 and settled in Dresden where he was engaged under the direction of Heinrich Schütz as Konzertmeister of the court orchestra. Between 1626 and 1628, he was very productive in publishing five collections of instrumental music dedicated to the family of violins, varying the geometries from four to two instruments: 104 pieces to four, 18 pieces to three and 6 pieces to two, a superb Directory. All the works for two instruments constitute the core of this album, around which evolve some predecessors and contemporaries: Steffan Nau, Pietro Melli and Michelangelo Rossi. Leila Schayegh plays on a Guarneri of 1675, accompanied by the harpsichord, the archiluth, the organ, the cello and the viola da gamba according to the inspiration of the scores.
