    End of status report

Since Joe Maneri's first ascendancy to free jazz royalty status in early 1992, all of his recordings have featured his son Mat as principle foil. The paternal bond they share is also in many ways fraternal; a telepathy of lines and nuance that forms the core of any of the larger ensembles of which they've been a part. A string of releases on ECM, Leo and the Hat Art labels have demonstrated this musical intimacy in the company of others, but Blessed is the inaugural instance where the relationship is stripped completely bare.

Echoing the essence of its title, Blessed is something of a belated benison. Originally recorded in late 1997, for some reason wires crossed and the disc never received U.S. distribution. Nearly four years later it's finally available in the States as a domestic release and the frustrations of listeners like myself who have been waiting fervently are finally allayed. Is the music worth the delay? The answer is a resounding affirmative.

The dynamic reaches of the ECM sound floor are the ideal environment for this meeting of microtonally infused strings, reeds and keys. Each of the dozen compositions is a doorway to fertile thematic dissection with several solo excursions tempering the various duo exchanges. Bending his notes to the point of absurdity on the lengthy "From Loosened Soil" the elder Maneri's microtones lodge in the crevices of fractured melody. Mat unsheathes his electric baritone violin, a dour creature capable of scouring the lower registers of the string family in dark resonating swathes on the solo "Sixty-One Joys". Joe is also featured solo on "Gardenias For Gardenis", a dedicatory clarinet piece to an early mentor that crams a spectrum of Klezmer and Rembetica colors into a mere minute and a half.
