    Jimmy Davis Biography:

One of the last maxwell-street blues singer-guitarists that were always typical for this chicago area, where the raw city blues found its origins and is still being performed on the street corners and gathering places on the south side, maxwell street Jimmy Davis music is as original, raw and fresh as ever. Born Charles Thomas in Clarksdale, Miss. in 1925 (he can't remember his exact birthday date) he learned to play the guitar on self-taught basis at the age of fourteen. He travelled around a lot and joined silas green and the rabbit foot minstrels, among others. In 1946 Jimmy moved to Detroit, where he met John Lee Hooker and performed with him at various clubs. After his move to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1953 he headed for the Greenville and Clarksdale, miss area in 1957 and played on many radio broadcasts that brought him some local recognition. In 1958 he made Chicago his home and settled down on maxweel streer. There he often teamed up with King David on harmonica and later Eddie Porkchop Hines on Drums. He even opened a restaurant the knotty pine grill, where he performed himself. In 1965 blues researcher/producer pete Welding heard him playing on the streets and arranged recording session for the testament and electra labels.
Jimmy Davis death on December 28, 1995.
