The full story of the incredible Janie Jones recording career, from her first big hit "Witches brew" in 1965 to her 1983 punk comback supported by "The Clash", who wrote "The House of the Ju Ju Queen" specially for Janie (and backed her on the single). As bizarre and eclectic set of singles as you would imagine from the woman dubbed "London's Vice Queen" by the News Of The World and jailed in 1973, this fascinating CD includes all her a and b sides plus several unissued numbers. The CD concentrates on her musical career with the likes of Jimmy Webb, Marc Bolan and others, and includes detailed notes plus loads of great pictures and cuttings, and a discography. The sixties have never swung quite like this before!
It's quite a feat to manufacture a 22-song compilation from Jones' slim legacy. RPM has managed the impossible on this disc, which has both sides of all five of her 1965-70 singles, as well as the 1983 "House of the Ju-Ju Queen"/"Sex Machine" single she recorded with the Clash (as Janie Jones and the Lash) and a bunch of demos, outtakes and alternates, most from the '60s. Even if you're in this for the laugh – certainly no one could make grand claims for the music – this is really stretching things past reasonable limits. The "Witches Brew" hit and mod music-hall comic items like "Tickle Me Tootsie Wootsies" and "Gunning for You" aren't all that amusing, and when Jones ditched saucy comedy for pure pop, well, let's just say that Jackie DeShannon does an infinitely better job with Jimmy Webb's "Girl's Song." Incredibly Strange Music fans will get a kick out of this; otherwise, the market is restricted to Clash completists, who will need this for the Janie Jones and the Lash single, as well as the lo-fi Joe Strummer demo of "House of the Ju-Ju Queen" that's also included.Review by Richie Unterberger, Allmusic.com
If it hadn't been for her connection with moors murderer Myra Hindley, the name Janie Jones would probably have escaped my notice forever. I had read her egotistical but readable book ('The Devil and Miss Jones'), where she spoke of how the child killer befriended and duped her, as well as her 'showbiz' career. In the Sixties she was a little known cabaret singer who performed in some of London's top clubs, rubbing shoulders with real celebrities. She cut a single, 'Witches Brew', which was a surprise minor hit, peaking at no.46 in the UK. For a time, she was a 'name', appearing on various TV shows, including 'Top of the Pops', and recording more singles, none of which were to trouble the charts.
Alas, it's not really for music that Janie is best remembered for, but for scandal. She had been sent to Holloway prison in 1973 after being found guilty of controlling prostitute, and previously encountered the law after her involvement in the BBC Radio One 'sex for airplay' payola scandal, of which she was cleared of. Prior to this, she had briefly been in the news for wearing a topless dress at a film premier.
When reading her book, I warmed a little to Janie, and my curiosity in her recording career was there. I picked up this rare compilation fully intending to be appalled by it's contents, but maybe I'd get a few laughs at least. To my surprise, it's not half bad. True, most of the earliest songs are pretty naff, but wonderfully so, and are strangely addictive. I'd describe this as a novelty record, and can well imagine her going down a treat in cabaret, her material was good fun.
The 'hit' 'Witches' Brew' is actually one of the weakest links, it has Janie cackling away to the lyrics in between her singing, and although catchy on first hearing, soon begins to tire. The follow-up single, 'Gunning For You' is great fun, and so catchy. She was given a more serious song with it's B side 'Go Go Away From Me', but most of the A sides were comedy songs, demonstrated further with the likes of the hilarious 'Tickle Me Tootsie Wootsies' (no surprise as to why that didn't reach the charts). The real gems can be found in the shape of her rendition of Jimmy Webb's lovely 'Girl's Song', the cheery pop song 'Back On My Feet', the should-have-been-hit 'Charlie Smith', and 'Cross On The Wall In Nashville', a considerable attempt at country and western. Two more B sides, 'Nobody's Perfect' and 'I've Never Met A Boy Like You' are also worth hearing out. The second from last track, 'Letter to Joe' is a very touching little song, deeply personal, heartfelt, and although she didn't write it herself, you could well assume that she did. It's a tribute to her close friend Joe Strummer, who had supported her after she left prison, and as soon as hear those few first lines, you just know that it's autobiographical.
The highlight on the lot, and the reason why my rating for this collection four stars instead of three, is 'House of the Juju Queen', a brassy, tongue-in-cheek belter of a tune, all about her days as a brothel madame. This was written and produced by Strummer himself, with his band The Clash playing on it, and issued as a single under the artist name of Janie Jones & The Lash in 1983. In fact, fans of Strummer might be interested in one of the bonus items on here, an acoustic demo of the aforementioned track, which features Joe at home singing it himself. The B side of 'Juju' was a fabulously camp version of James Brown's 'Sex Machine'.
Ultimately, I found this to be a most appealing treasure trove of some quality Sixties tunes, along with curious novelty numbers, and yes, a little bit of dross thrown in. Janie's vocal talents are limited, but she sang with passion and with a sincerity. 'We're In Love With The World Of Janie Jones!' is well worth a listen as far as I'm concerned, and I'd welcome another compilation from this once infamous woman in order to make her music more widely available again at a reasonable price. There's 22 tracks on here, five of which had been unreleased until it's 1997 appearance as well as an informative fold-out booklet, illustrated with great pictures and cuttings, making you feel like you have a real collector's item in your hands.
