Every Silver Lining Has A Cloud is a 1995 CD by Julian Schnabel. Despite the shape of the object on the cover, it is not that of a penis. Allegedly. This was Schnabel's first and only album. It was produced by Bill Laswell, with people like guitarist Buckethead and actor Gary Oldman making appearances. This came out on Island.

Coming from a painter who likes to work on a heroic scale, Julian Schnabel's debut pop album, Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud (Island), is remarkably self-effacing. With a thin wavering voice that cracks on the high notes, Mr. Schnabel sounds like a lost little urban cowboy, awash in self-pity.

The songs, which Mr. Schnabel wrote with several collaborators, are the morose reflections of a world traveler who finds himself at loose ends after being abandoned by a lover. "I don't know what I'm going to do without you," he moans in "When I Was Young." "Loneliness surrounds me/ Without your arms around me," he declares in "Apartment No. 9." The title song bids "goodbye to every friend I knew."

Among the album's gallery of romantic losers, the most vivid character is Juan Belmonte, an aging bullfighter with a girlfriend half his age, who hangs himself because "he wished he could be something else, anybody but himself."

Although the album's melodies meander, the songs are atmospherically set by Bill Laswell (the co-producer, with Mr. Schnabel), and several have a pronounced Spanish flavor. The watery-sounding guitar and keyboard textures accentuate the lyrics' pained vulnerability. It is that vulnerability, the sense of an artist unguardedly (and often artlessly) pouring out his heart, that is the album's most appealing quality.
