Dushan Petrossi joined the ranks of many prominent power metal artists of the late 90s revolution in choosing the nadir of the genre as the appropriate time for a few years of studio silence. Between his two projects, Magic Kingdom has proven to be the more geared towards innovative ventures, while Iron Mask has been a more conservative affair, and consequently comes off as the more dominant of his two projects. At his heart, Dushan is a full blown student of the Malmsteen school of both shred and songwriting, putting forth a song set that is more in line with mostly retro 80s oriented bands such as Concerto Moon and Stormwind, and ultimately resembles Yngwie’s mid 80s offerings with a somewhat modernized production character.
Despite taking a 4 year studio hiatus (a shorter one than the 6 year break of Magic Kingdom), Iron Mask hasn’t lost any steam since 2005, nor has it really veered away from the Baroque meets power metal orthodoxy of past efforts. There’s plenty of fast paced fits of catchy brilliance, headed up by an ensemble of vocalists that underscore the gritty, sleazy character of Jeff Scott Soto. The dominant presence is Oliver Hartmann, whose massive voice fills up the arrangement quite nicely on “Dreams”, one of the more groovy and galloping numbers to be turned up, and consequently one that takes after the rocking, Deep Purple character of Hartmann’s previous project At Vance, though Petrossi’s riffs are a bit busier and the solos are all but 100% reinterpretations of what was heard on “Trilogy”.
Interestingly enough, “Shadow Of The Red Baron” is the first album where this band decides to put their best foot forward right at the beginning, but manages to keep things consistent throughout. The title song is among the better speed metal celebrations put together in recent years, blazing out some busy guitar work and a gutsy vocal delivery out of Goetz Mohre, who is almost as formidable a presence at the microphone as Hartmann, but comes off with a bit more of a throaty character to his voice. Other memorable songs come in the form of a somewhat folksy seafaring tale in “Black Devil Ship” and a down tempo Mid-Eastern stomper in “Resurrection”, both of which manage to emulate classic 80s shred while mixing things up a bit in the influences department. And to polish off the whole thing is Dushan’s expressive lead guitar display on “Ghost Of The Tzar”, meshing together Malmsteen’s down tempo shred instrumental template with a set of garbled narrations in a haunting death growl, almost as if channeling some of the extreme metal elements found on Magic Kingdom.
When approaching an album like this, it is a foregone conclusion that surprises will be few, but when they happen on here, they really stick out and garner about twice the effect of most obnoxiously eclectic progressive outfits. Iron Mask is not revolutionary, and any evolutionary steps are taken in occasional strides that are tantamount to a short walk off one’s backyard and around the block perhaps. Most of the 80s shred crowd will eat this up just as quickly as they tend to a good number of neo-classically oriented bands, but a number of traditional German speed metal fans who like a streamlined, Gamma Ray approach to songwriting could also be roped in by an album like this. It’s a slight cut above the latest Magic Kingdom album, both of which are welcome returns to form after a couple years of AOR encroachment into the genre.by hells_unicorn, metal-archives.com
