All the pieces included here are by French composers who lived during the impressionist period. D’Indy’s Symphonie sur un chant montagnard français is a sort of hybrid work, a mixture of a symphony and a piano concerto. This work enables the highly regarded Martin Helmchen to demonstrate his musical and technical skills once again.

Reviews: This is a well-chosen concert of French music that has the look of a typical Decca-London recording by the Suisse Romande Orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet. The orchestra now sounds better than it did then, but I have some reservations about Marek Janowski conducting this music (even though he previously recorded the Symphony on a French Mountain Air ). Charles Munch (with Nicole Henriot-Schweitzer on RCA) and Charles Dutoit (with Jean-Yves Thibaudet on Decca-London) have made fine recordings of the D’Indy piece, but I have always preferred Eugene Ormandy and Robert Casadesus because of the outrageously voluptuous and velvety sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the manner in which Casadesus played those rippling piano phrases and runs. Janowski’s interpretation begins rather portentously but then takes off nicely. At the big brass climax of the first movement Ormandy lets his orchestra expand like a Cinemascope portrait of the French landscape while Janowski makes an ill-advised acceleration in tempo that sounds a little frenetic in comparison. In the third movement, Janowski brings things together with plenty of rhythmic precision for the big tune.

Camille Saint Saëns’s charming little Second Symphony is a far cry from his famously bombastic “Organ” Symphony, but listeners will find it to be very enjoyable for its orchestration and the composer’s technical prowess, even if there are not a lot of instantly hummable melodies. Janowski may sound a little heavy-handed, but he is not helped by the forward sound that lacks the last word in transparency. Soir de Fête is the best of the group, and that is very good. Janowski successfully captures the dynamic contrasts between the animated outer sections and the hothouse romanticism of the central part and the luscious final cadence.

As I mentioned, the orchestra is miked very closely, yielding an up-front aural perspective, and the otherwise acceptable but darkly colored SACD sound does not provide the last word in finely nuanced instrumental detail that would be ideal for these works. So, this is an excellent concert that is certainly well played, but is recorded in a way that does not show it in the best possible light. Still, the SACD is well worth it for those listeners interested in this particular collection of charming French music.
