Russian pianist and conductor Igor Zhukov studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where two outstanding pianists influenced his talent: Heinrich Neuhaus and Emil Gilels. Alexander Scriabin's musical legacy ranks high among Zhukov s concert repertoire. From his first concert performances, the pianist turned to the works of this distinguished master, receiving great critical acclaim. The ten sonatas included on this Melodiya release are milestones of the composer's piano works.
This is a wonderful recording, and the best I have heard of these works.The Sonatas are a fascinating set which show Scriabin's steady evolution as a composer, from his youngest days steeped in Russian romanticism, greatly influenced by Chopin, through the eventual development of his highly unique and personal idiom. These CDs are re-releases of the Melodiya LPs recorded in the early 1970's. Zhukov is a marvelous pianist who perfectly captures the romantic, ecstatic, and later on, the mysterious and mystical qualities of this music. His approach is direct, never distorted, with great warmth, beautiful tone, color, and voicing. He perfectly captures the nervousness of the later sonatas without ever becoming frantic. It's a pity that Mr. Zhukov did not do more recording. What he did record is largely of lesser known - even obscure - works, which he plays very well indeed. If he ever performed in the states, I never knew about it, because I would certainly have made a point of hearing him. Highest recommendation.Review by JR, Amazon.com
