Frank Peter Zimmermann, who in 2010 was awarded the international Paul Hindemith Prize of the City of Hanau, makes a great case for these works. His Trio recently won the 2013 BBC Music Magazine Award for their Chamber recording of Beethoven’s Trio Op. 9. In the concerto Zimmermann teams up with Paavo Järvi, another recipient of the Paul Hindemith Prize and principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Reviews: Even though it contains many gorgeous passages for the solo violin, alone and accompanied, Hindemith’s 1939 Violin Concerto comes across as almost a symphony. The opening Mässig bewegte Halbe abounds in mighty, Mathis der Maler -like tutti; the slow movement, too, echoes Mathis ; the lively Finale at last breaks loose from that Symphony’s shadow—for a while. A 1964 analog stereo recording by Isaac Stern and Leonard Bernstein (who studied composition with Hindemith at Tanglewood in 1940) makes an instructive comparison. Stern throws himself into the music with little concern for the niceties of the violin, and Bernstein’s New York Philharmonic blazes with colors the Frankfurt ensemble does not possess. Sony’s CD is somewhat raw and harsh, but the intense performance captures the essence of Hindemith’s work, as this one does not. So does a 1968 recording by André Gertler with the Czech Philharmonic led by Karel An?erl. Performers of that era understood Hindemith, who was then classed with Bartók and Stravinsky— The New Grove Modern Masters (1980) is devoted solely to those three composers. That respect led to well informed, well executed, and often inspired performances of Hindemith’s music. Frank Peter Zimmermann plays more smoothly than Stern or Gertler, but the performance is careful and cautious. A fine BIS recording makes what it can of the radio orchestra in the somewhat tunnel-like acoustics of Frankfurt’s Alte Oper. SACD adds transparency to the tuttis, and surround sound fills them out solidly, but neither can transform the orchestra. If you want to hear the sound of Hindemith’s Violin Concerto, this is the disc for you. If you want to hear its music, go to the Sony.
Pairing the Concerto with four of Hindemith’s seven published violin sonatas is unusual; which is the filler? The recording venue moves to Dobbiaco, Italy, and the performances take on a Mediterranean charm. So does the music, as Zimmermann has chosen four of Hindemith’s more lyrical sonatas. He plays them that way, too, thankfully stopping well short of heart-on-sleeve. The early (1918) E? Sonata has a rather conventional piano accompaniment, so the strong contributions of Enrico Pace—a renowned soloist and chamber-music performer—become more noticeable in the later scores. He and Zimmermann seem ideally paired; together they raise a magnificent storm in the 1935 Finale. The 1939 Sonata has often seemed cold and prickly; even its closing fugue is lovely here, rising to a thrilling peroration. All four sonatas shine in these performances, and BIS has found a fine acoustic in which to showcase its wares.
