After her last two albums of completely new compositions, “Silfra” and “In 27 Pieces – The Hilary Hahn Encores”, Hilary returns with classic-romantic repertoire. Two-times Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn now combines Mozart’s beloved Concerto in A, K 219 – with its fiery “Turkish” episode – with the rich, virtuosic romanticism of Vieuxtemps’ Violin Concerto No. 4.
More than 25 years have passed since Hilary first learned both concertos: “Ever since early childhood, opening the sheet music to a piece I love but haven’t yet played has felt like a magical combination of winning the lottery and setting out on an epic trip.” The release features a wonderful interplay of Hilary Hahn and Paavo Järvi with his orchestra The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

Reviews: Watching the arc of a career is always fascinating. Hilary Hahn has refined what was already her superb technique since her debut and she is now a violinist of impressive power and sensitivity. I own many of her recordings and she has repeatedly impressed me with her intelligence in matching technique and performance style to the composer as well as her ever increasing depth of interpretation. She always avoids a facile approach to anything she performs. Hahn has a special affinity for playing Bach and Mozart. Having come to maturity during the "historically informed performance" era, she plays with a moderate vibrato which she uses judiciously for expressive purposes. Her 2005 recording of Mozart violin sonatas with Natalie Zhu was superb, as was her 2003 recording of Bach violin concertos. I strongly recommend both of them.
In this latest recording featuring the Mozart Violin Concerto No.5 and the Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto No.4, Hahn juxtaposes Mozart's classical era perfection with the stormy romanticism of a concerto composed as a showcase for the violinist/composer and his wondrous Vieuxtemps Guarneri del Gesu. The del Gesu is a violin built in 1741 by the great Italian luthier Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri which already had a reputation for perfection in Vieuxtemps' time. The concerto is darkly lyrical and deeply melancholy in the slow movements, sparkles energetically in the Scherzo and Finale, and exhibits a real gift for composition. It is much more than a mere showpiece for a fiddle player. Hahn plays it beautifully with exquisite technical prowess and taste. It is one of the finest recordings of this concerto that I've heard. Listening to the Heifetz recording of March 4, 1935 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under John Barbirolli makes for a fascinating comparison. Hahn seems enthralled by the dark lyricism of the concerto while Heifetz emphasizes its drama and its moments of dazzling virtuosity. Two artists playing the same piece with a different vision, each approach with a claim to equal validity. Hahn's performance with its sensitivity and beauty is especially fulfilling.
The Mozart 5th Violin Concerto is beautifully melodic and brilliantly inventive, written when Mozart was all of 19 years of age. Playing this concerto requires an entirely different approach than the one used when performing the Vieuxtemps. Mozart accomplishes more with restraint than other composers can with the most florid musical works. Once again, Hahn adapts her style of playing and its attendant technique to the composer and his era and produces a particularly lovely interpretation. Her dynamic control, expressive lyricism and musical intelligence are all on display. She plays with a particularly lovely legato, and by the spare use of vibrato, when she does use it, makes it a powerfully expressive weapon in her arsenal. Hahn has become an exemplary Mozartean, which you can verify for yourself by watching her superlative performance of the Violin Concerto No.3 in G major, K 216 conducted by Gustavo Dudamel on YouTube.
These are exemplary performances of the two works and more evidence of the continuing growth of Hilary Hahn as a formidable violinist.
