Captain Phillips is director Paul Greengrass's multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is — through Greengrass’s distinctive lens — simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Set on an incontrovertible collision course off the coast of Somalia, both men will find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control. The film is directed by Academy Award® nominee Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray based upon the book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca. For one of his biggest scores to date, composer Henry Jackman takes his music to the high seas for this epic adventure.

First of all, let me say that I am a huge fan of composer Henry Jackman. His score for "Wreck-It Ralph" will forever remain on my iPod; his work on "X-Men First Class" is the best X-Men music there is; and I also loved his musical contribution to "Kick-Ass 2" earlier this year.

Having said that, I think "Captain Phillips" is Jackman's weakest album in a while. That's not to say it's bad, given that Jackman has set the bar so high; in fact, it's possible the music will fit perfectly into the film. But as an isolated listening experience, once was enough - this is the kind of score with very few themes or memorable moments, so the re-play value is very low.

Of course, the composer's job is to deliver a score that satisfies the film's director… and to this end I wonder how much of this has to do with Paul Greengrass. "United 93", a previous film from Greengrass, was a very tense movie that was made all the more realistic because it employed music sparingly (a good decision in my view). Since "Captain Phillips" is also a thriller based on true historical events, it's possible Greengrass again should have taken this approach that less is more. But the music here sounds a lot like your everyday action movie score (actually, it would fit well with the Bourne movies that Greengrass made). Rather than having the effect of increasing the suspense, the music is instead likely to remind the audience that they're watching a Hollywood-ized account of this harrowing real-life drama.
