    Henri Dutilleux's latest orchestral work, ''The Shadows of Time,'' has much to recommend it on its own terms, but when Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony gave the work its New York premiere at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday evening, the piece also carried a provocative question for the start of a new concert season. It challenged listeners to remember the last time they had left a concert by a major American orchestra convinced that a freshly minted work was the highlight of the program, and to wonder why the experience was so rare.

    The ''The Shadows of Time'' has both a sobering sense of purpose and an illuminating imaginativeness that keep it lingering in the memory. Perhaps Mr. Dutilleux's secret is the character of his musical language. It has the unmistakable hallmarks of modernism – free dissonance, metrical complexity and continuously shifting textures, for example – but it also incorporates the expressivity and structural landmarks that listeners more comfortable with 19th-century Romanticism require.

    One immediately ear-catching element in this 21-minute meditation on the nature of time is the suggestion of a ticking clock, heard in the opening and again, slightly off-kilter, in the final bars. Time is presented almost as a physical characteristic in the opening section, ''Les Heures.'' Discrete streams of it (represented in brass, string and wind figures) unravel simultaneously but at different speeds. When the streams come together, they take on an ominous quality that grows steadily darker in the second episode, ''Ariel malefique,'' an evocation of the dark angel from Milton's ''Paradise Lost.''

    The coloration continues to darken in the third section, ''Memoire des Ombres,'' which Mr. Dutilleux dedicated to the memory of Anne Frank ''and all the children of the world, the innocents.'' Innocence is represented here by a simple, sweetly angular vocalise, sung by three children (Joel Esher, Rachael Plotkin and Jordan Swaim) against a tense wind and string backdrop that suggests continuing peril. The final two sections, ''Vagues de Lumiere'' and ''Dominante Bleue?,'' gradually return the work to a more abstract exploration of time and, in the finale, coloration.

    Section for section, the orchestra's performance was superbly focused, and Mr. Ozawa seemed to have full control of both the work's complex balances and its changing levels of tension.
