    released in 1999

Haenssler has just released the first disc (it contains 94/104/overture to Acis and Galatea) in what they claim will be a complete series of the Haydn symphonies, due to be completed in, appropriately enough, 2009. Since they're not a "major" label perhaps they will actually deliver (cf Sony, which has aborted two, and Oiseau Lyre which has one on permanent hold (whatever that means); but then, Hyperion has ditched Goodman's…). I hope they do, because on this showing the musicians in question – all new to me – are an exciting bunch. The orchestra – Heidelberger Sinfoniker – uses modern instruments except for the brass and timpani (no continuo instrument is audible in the symphonies; a harpsichord shows up in the overture, which is much earlier), and the conductor, the youngish (38-39) Thomas Fey studied with Harnoncourt for several years to exciting effect.

If you don't like Harnoncourt's approach in Haydn, you should probably stay away because not only are his influences are obvious – more legato phrasing than usual, fast minuets but with much slower trios, pungent textures, strong accents, etc. – he, to quote Emeril, "kicks it up a notch." Dynamic contrasts are wider, brass and timpani are more prominent (the superior sound helps; as so often Haenssler's sound here is thrillingly immediate, transparent and detailed but not especially close), accents are sharper, tempo fluctuations are more noticeable, tempi are usually quicker, and there's an even greater sense of exuberance (the finale of 94 is quite thrilling; Fey is also one of the few conductors to notice that the timpani solo, which is either ignored (e.g. Dorati) or played ffff (e.g. Jochum, Szell), is marked only forte, and that the loudest music occurs afterwards). I can imagine that some will find what Fey does too interventionist, too fussy: more than most he shapes phrases imaginatively and, because he does so, the music often ends up sounding
different from usual (this is even the case with something as simple as timpani rolls; they are seldom the usual even roll but are instead prone to crescenedos and/or accentuation that emphasizes the occasional specific note in the roll). I particularly like how he shapes the minuet in 94, giving a firm kick to the last note of each phrase (far more so than Harnoncourt, say). So, for my money this the most exciting new Haydn disc I've heard in ages. I hope enough of you agree to keep the series going…. (Simon Roberts on rec.music.classical.recordings)
