This is a fairly amazing blast of Hawkwind, and unexpected to boot! Trimmed to a trio, Brock, Chadwick and Niall Hone deliver the most satisfying Hawkwind lp in about 20 years. From the opener Stellar Perspective to the closing Distant Predictions, this is the first album to have an audibly large input from Dave Brock in a long while. Sandwiched in between the uneven Blood of the Earth and the even weaker Onward, two releases that gave indications the starship was in jeopardy, this quietly snuck out to little fanfare.
Billed as the Hawkwind Light Orchestra (did they not know ELO references scare people?) as a nod to only the trio present here, this album bears a strong resemblance to 1992's trio lp Electric Teepee (considered in some circles to be their last really solid release). The production also is fairly warm and dynamic, lacking the compression that made Onward all but unlistenable.
Musically the band is in top form. Some guitar leads are vaguely reminiscent of Gary Moore, possibly Niall Hone's doing. HIs bass playing is also extremely strong, and has echoes of a powerful and melodic Alan Davey in the opening track. Brock's All Our Dreams is one of several songs that strongly echo Church of Hawkwind, another noticeable reference point for this album. Its All Lies is a nice reworking of both the musical and lyrical themes of Electric Teepee's Right to Decide. The only piece that doesn't quite gell as a Hawkwind piece is Damp Day in August, a Caribbean infused instrumental that would not be out of place on the Anderson, Wakeman. Bruford Howe album (!). Yet that is only a quibble. Overall this is the light in the sky indicating that all is well in the Hawkwind universe. Although trimming to a trio to improve a sound seems counter intuitive, this is exactly what has happened here.~Amazon
