Trio Records proudly presents a 'live' recording of a quartet featuring the incredible US jazz saxophonist Harry Allen recorded at the Watermill Jazz Club with Italian pianist Andrea Pozza, gifted bassist Simon Woolf and ever popular drummer Steve Brown.

Fans of the long linage of the saxophone greats will not be disappointed. Harry Allen can be instantly lined up as a disciple of the late Stan Getz, but he has absorbed far more of the jazz saxophone tradition with elements of Hawkins, Webster, Zoot and Al, and elements from one of his teachers Scott Hamilton. However, Harry Allen's voice is very much his own and as fresh as any on the contemporary scene. With a formidable technique and searing sound Harry Allen continues the tradition of the great saxophonists before him.

The material on the CD is a straight blowing set ofjazz standards, a couple of great originals penned by Harry Allen and Judy Carmichael and the theme to Star Trek based on the standard Out Of Nowhere.

I've been a fan of tenorman Harry Allen's work for many years. He's a high-class musician - broadly in the Stan Getz/Zoot Sims sphere. For a long time, his finest album for me has been "Day Dream" from 1998, leading a quartet with the incomparable Tommy Flanagan on piano (a mix of quartet and duo tracks) - unfortunately hard to find for contractual reasons but well worth hunting down - closely followed by "A Little Touch of Harry" from the year before, leading another very strong quartet with the wonderful Kenny Barron on piano. This album is certainly up there with those. It was recorded "live" when Harry toured here in 2015, with yet another strong quartet (with Andrea Pozza on piano, Simon Woolf on bass and Steve Brown on drums). The title is slightly misleading, because it was actually recorded at a jazz club in Surrey - but, with urban sprawl, that's not far off the truth! In the same period, I was lucky enough to catch Harry's group at Herts Jazz in Welwyn Garden City, and it's good to have this album as a reminder of a great night there. The hour-long programme is a good mixture of up-tempo numbers and ballads with fine work from all hands. Thoroughly recommended.
