    In 1958 the first records appeared under the banner of Harmonia Mundi, the company founded by the French journalist Bernard Coutaz. Half a century later, Coutaz is still in charge and his creation has developed into one of the most important independent classical labels in the world, carefully preserving the same values and virtues. Next year's anniversary is being marked by this collection, a retrospective of 50 works.
    The emphasis is on complete pieces and not extracts, so three discs are devoted to Philippe Herreweghe's performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion, three more to Lully's opera Atys conducted by William Christie, and another trio to Reinhard Keiser's 1730 music drama Croesus.
    Two discs devoted to the countertenor Alfred Deller include his consort's performance of Purcell's King Arthur, and the major instrumental works dotted through the discs range from violinist Andrew Manze's account of Biber's Rosary Sonatas and Mozart's Prague Symphony through Schubert's great B flat Piano Sonata (in Paul Lewis's fine recording), right up to Shostakovich's Eighth String Quartet (the Jerusalem Quartet). There are generous notes with the set, while a CD-ROM includes all the texts, but, amazingly, none of this documentation offers an easily accessible list of the contents of each of the discs, which can only be found by thumbing through the pages of the accompanying booklet. The dates of each recording, rather important information in the circumstances, do not seem to be included at all. Despite that, though, this is a wonderful bargain, and a treasure trove of fascinating performances and repertory. (guardian.co.uk)
