Original soundtrack to the 2013 TV miniseries composed by Hans Zimmer, Lorne Balfe and Lisa Gerrard. The five-part docudrama is created and executive produced by Mark Burnett (The Voice, Survivor) and Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel) and will cover the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, including stories from Noah's Ark and the Exodus to Daniel in the Lion's Den to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
There are few stories as epic as those contained within the Bible, so it should come as no surprise that the History Channel's five-week, ten-hour television mini series of the same name would tap a veteran composer of countless epics, Hanz Zimmer, to provide the score. Bolstered by Dead Can Dance vocalist Lisa Gerrard and Scottish composer/Zimmer understudy Lorne Balfe, Zimmer's take on biblical times is similar to the one he took on 2006's Da Vinci Code (that film's lovely and expansive "CheValiers de Sangreal" seems to be the springboard for many of the Bible's themes), deftly balancing heavenly choral arrangements and circular melodies with explosive action cues, resulting in a score that's about as subtle as the parting of the red sea.Review by James Christopher Monger, Allmusic.com
This soundtrack is quite powerful and diverse. Zimmer created great emotional displays of power for songs as well as songs for background and sad sequences. After listening to it several times, I could hear the places where Zimmer placed Arab sounds into the music, even in the songs which are meant to display emotion rather than geographical accuracy. I found the combination of powerful and emotional songs to be very effective in delivering a strong, diverse set of tracks. The Arab twist to the songs also provides a very unique sound. Lisa Gerrard's unique vocals are placed throughout the album adding to the tones of songs. The emotional songs like "Faith," "In the Beginning," and "Creation Choral" each display a truly unique feel. "Faith" is a long song that starts with quiet Arab styled instrumentation and then adds Gerrard's vocals which builds with the strings and a full orchestra communicating a beautiful theme through the addition and subtraction of parts throughout the song. "In the Beginning" was an excellent song that I thought showed the sheer power of the act of creation from the Bible. The song is bold and loud, using the full orchestra and vocals to highlight the beauty and strength of creation. "Creation Choral" is an excellent song wherein the vocals reminded me of the "Angels and Demons" soundtrack because of the tone of the vocals and style of singing. The song is beautiful and very memorable while still exploring the wonder of creation. Other songs, like "Pray for Us," "King David," and "Pentecost" are filled with the Arab style themes. Each song is unique and while some are more of a background song, others still portray bold uses of strings and vocals to display the point of the song and scene.
The album as a whole is a wonderful soundtrack filled with several great songs, and many other good songs. The album feels as if no song was added for a filler which adds to the album because it provides 16 songs worth listening to instead of the too often produced album which possesses a fifty percent good, fifty percent filler ratio. Zimmer created a work of art for this soundtrack and many of the songs have great themes and beautiful vocals. Zimmer and Gerrard working together before has created great albums before and this one rates just below their collaboration for "Gladiator."
