Scipione was the eighth complete opera Handel wrote for the Royal Academy of Music (it was also preceded by Muzio Scevola, of which Handel wrote only act III). Completed in 1726, it followed three of Handel’s greatest operas, Giulio Cesare, Tamerlano, and Rodelinda. While it is not on the level of those masterpieces, and despite its hasty composition, it contains much that is good and worthy of an occasional hearing.
This recording is a reissue of a performance originally issued by FNAC in 1994. It was, I assume, only available for a short time because FNAC closed its music division in 1994. This is the only recording to date of Scipione, so its reissue has been greatly desired by those who missed its original issue.
David Johnson reviewed the original issue (Fanfare 17:6). While pointing out that the cast is mostly French, he noted, “Their Italian is only slightly tinged with gallicisms, their voices are beautiful, they have ample technique, … and they invest the characters they portray with a sense of life and drama. … American Derek Lee Ragin, who is entrusted with the title role, … sounds a bit too womanly … [but] is astonishing in the role.” I am in complete agreement with Johnson’s review and would also point to the outstanding playing of Les Talens Lyriques and the excellent work of Christophe Rousset. The opera is performed without cuts. Tempos are never rushed. And what a pleasure it is to have a recording in which the continuo is performed as it should be. Da capo ornaments are frequently tasteful and idiomatic, though they occasionally stray into recomposition instead of decoration of the vocal line, especially in Doris Lamprecht’s arias.
The packaging consists of a cardboard slipcase containing the booklet and discs. Each disc is contained in one of those cardboard sleeves that are small enough to make extracting the disc difficult. The notes, libretto, and translations are reproduced from the FNAC issue, with an updated entry on Les Talens Lyriques and a new essay from Christophe Rousset. The reprinted libretto also perpetuates a mistake in the FNAC libretto, in which some lines of recitative were omitted after Ernando’s “Tutta rea” near the beginning of act III, though they are sung in the performance and noted in the track listing.
Handelians who missed the original issue should snap this up while it is available. Even if the opera were to be recorded anew, any new recording would be hard-pressed to equal this one.
