Nach der hoch gelobten Aufnahme von Händels "Riccardo Primo" hat sich das Kammerorchester Basel unter Leitung des Händel-Spezialisten Paul Godwin mit den Solisten Nuria Rial, Lawrence Zazzo und Geraldine McGreevy erneut zusammengetan und eines der schönsten Oratorien Händels, "Athalia", neu eingespielt. Das Libretto (geschrieben von Samuel Humphreys) geht auf das Zweite Buch der Könige zurück und erzählt von der Königin Athalia, die vom jüdischen- zum Baalsglauben übertrat. Als Vorlage diente Jean Racines Tragödie Athalie. Die Uraufführung des Oratoriums 1735 war ein solcher Erfolg, dass das Werk noch vier Mal wiederholt werden musste.
Hatte das Ensemble mit Riccardo Primo schon beispielhaft demonstriert "…wie Koloratursouveränität mit Gestaltungskraft einher gehen kann - Referenzqualität!" (Frankfurter Rundschau), so merkt man auch dieser Aufnahme an, dass sich Orchester und Solisten lange mit dem Oratorium auseinandergesetzt haben und erst nach zahlreichen gemeinsamen "Athalia"-Aufführungen ins Studio gegangen sind, um eine perfekte Aufnahme in höchster Qualität dieser großartigen Musik Händels vorzulegen.Après l'enregistrement primé par la critique du "Riccardo Primo" de Händel, l'Orchestre de chambre de Bâle enregistre une nouvelle version d'"Athalia", un des plus beaux oratorios de Händel, sous la direction du spécialiste Paul Goodwin et en compagnie des solistes Nuria Rial, Lawrence Zazzo et Geraldine McGreevy, avec qui l'orchestre avait déjà collaboré avec succès. Le livret narre le destin de la reine Athalie qui, vénérant Baal, a renié le dieu d'Israël dont elle est souveraine. La première de cet oratorio en 1735 connut un tel triomphe qu'elle fut reconduite à quatre reprises.
