Half Man - The Complete Field Guide For Cynics (1999)

Half Man was a Swedish stoner/blues rock band. Half Man formed in 1986 but split after two years. The original line-up featured Janne Bengtsson on guitar and vocals, Gunnar Andersson on guitar and vocals, Patric Carlsson on bass, and Mats Nilsson on drums. The band reformed in 1990 with Bengtsson and Carlsson accompanied by guitarist Peter Lilja and drummer Roger Bengtsson. A demo was recorded in 1994 but an album was not recorded until 1998, when the band self-released The Complete Field Guide for Cynics in a limited run of 500. Border Records picked up the album and re-released it in larger quantities. The band released a split 7" with Mothercake in 2000 and appeared on Small Stone Records tribute to Aerosmith, Right in the Nuts. The band released their second and final album in 2002 entitled Red Herring on the Italian label Beard of Stars.

They drank, played, bars, honky-tonks and annywhere there was a crowd, they fought constantly, but Half Man, the band was all that this working class boys had. Then after twelve years together they decided to split up. But before the brake they booked a studio to make one record. Their first and last. Frustration, angst, old bones to pick, aggravation, hatred and the death of the band was in the mind of the four boys, now men, who entered the studio that night. It was a cold December night the studio was situated far out in the Swedish countryside. It vas a silent car ride to the place. Instruments and amplifiers were set up. Everything was ready.

The producer Matias Nilsson tells the story:
-So there they were four people, like brothers but they just couldn´t get along, it had to end.
They sat down in a circle on the studio floor it must have been abut ten o clock, they started to pas around a cigarette and a whiskey bottle, nobody said anything.
Then after several hours at two in the morning they all got up as by a given command.
They had their own songs, 12 years hard work had molded them to perfection they had some PJ Harvey covers and they knew exactly how it should sound.
The first song they recorded wasInsane because that was how they felt.

To this day they haven´t seen each other or talked to one another again.
But the record exists.
Blues, Swamprock, Stoner, psych, metal, Rock the styles of this cult records has been given many names.
Its not for the faint hearted it is a record that will haunt you for the rest of your life.
