The imagery of fire is one of a raging inferno that devours everything in its trail to leave nothing but cataclysmic destruction. That is exactly that Greece hailed metal guitarist Gus G.‘s solo offering ‘I Am The Fire’ achieves, through metal histrionics and charring riffs, as it ignites predecessor records. His achievements stem from his own band Firewind, as well as his projects with Ozzy Osbourne, but this daring solitary enterprise is one that will take listeners on a brand new journey.

The album opens with ‘My Will Be Done’, featuring current Swedish epic doom metal five-piece Candlemass vocalist Mats Levén, whom features throughout the record in tracks such as ‘Eyes Wide Open’. The track instantly epitomises a classic rock vibe, and builds on the foundations it laid in its hay day with a modern twist. A rapid continuity of percussion and guitar tones fuels Levén’s at times Led Zeppelin-like vocal chords that combine classic with current as high riffs charge the batteries for a record of complexity.

The theme of using guests continues through every track on the album so that each thrills the ear with uncertainty. Heavy bloodthirstiness filters in through ‘Vengeance’ and ‘Terrified’ with the addition of Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson and David Lee Roth’s Billy Sheehan as they shred callous cumbersome instrumentals in savage unity with Gus G, that not act as interludes, but as merciless energisers. His guitar flair is undeniable as riffs dominate ruthlessly, showcasing his love for metal in a way that is accessible to lovers of modern and classic rock.

Slower gradual burners take to the stage in the record through ‘Dreamkeeper’ and ‘Just Can’t Let Go’ as they unveil Gus G.’s songwriting style that is diverse beyond the realms of metal. His keyboard skills come to light here as the softer notes lay beneath guitar sultry, yet still stimulate a classic rock mentality. These tracks in addition illustrate the variation displayed in this body of work. Each guest vocalist provides an original flourish in the 12-track record that creates a passionate uniqueness. ‘Long Way Down’ sees Eyes Set To Kill vocalist Alexia Rodriguez gleam with accomplished striking harmonies that bring the track to life. From this, to track ‘Summer Days’, featuring current Trans-Siberian Orchesta vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, whom marshals an introduction that provides goosebumps from a resemblance to time-honoured guitar notions.

Overall, Gus G. has written and recorded a solo piece of work that is nothing less than unique. ‘I Am The Fire’ highlights that his skill base goes far above a world of metal breakdowns, as his songwriting showcases originality and genius, as well as use of guests lifting the record from something average to something phenomenal.
