Some composers really deserve their reputation as artists whose fame rests on a single work, but with Holst the popularity of The Planets really has obscured the large quantity of good music he wrote in other forms. Part of the problem also stemmed from his daughter, Imogene, who was severely critical of her father's work and whose baleful influence persists to this day. These three choral ballets contain a large measure of delightful and wholly characteristic music. It's crime that we have had to wait until now for a complete recording of them, and fortunately these performances make a strong case for many more.
In classifying Holst's The Golden Goose and The Morning of the Year, file them under choral ballets because that's how Holst described them. And why not? Like the works by Morley and Weelkes upon which they are based, The Golden Goose and The Morning of the Year were written to be sung and danced. But since neither choral ballet had been performed or recorded in decades, no one's heard Holst's Golden Goose in a long, long time. Thankfully, in this terrific recording of the works by Hilary Dawn Wetton conducting the Guilford Choral Society and the Philharmonic Orchestra, one can do The Golden Goose more. Wetton and the Guilford recorded a handful of discs for Hyperion dedicated to the lesser known but better composed choral works of Holst and Vaughan Williams, and they've all been just as terrific as this one. But even the least well known of those works was a veritable Planets in popularity compared with The Golden Goose and The Morning of the Year. But as they have before, Wetton and the Guilford deliver performances that compel not only belief but enjoyment. Their Golden Goose is brilliant and bumptious, and their Morning of the Year is earthy and ethereal. Holst's early King Estmere is blunt, bluff, blatant, and clearly a much lesser work, but Wetton and the Guilford still give it enough excitement to make it convincing at least as long as it's playing. Hyperion's sound is warm but perhaps too reserved.
