This is pretty much your standard Dead show fare with one exception: "Dark Star". Shortly into Dark Star, Jerry cracks open the void and leads his brethern through some of their most intuitive playing ever. It's all there: the Dead play with passion, color, texture and clarity. It is 23 minutes in a transcendent reality where the listener and the music are the same thing. It is too bad it is the opening cut on the album because the rest of this excellent show pales in comparison to the first 23 minutes of the best Dead zone ever.

The Grateful Dead were a US psychedelic folk rock band led by Jerry Garcia. They were one of the cornerstones of 60’s counterculture.
Their career commenced in the spiritual home of the hippy, Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. They evolved from a band called The Warlocks, one of the bands to regularly play at Ken Kesey’s acid tests, where people would gather to tune in, turn on and drop out. The Warlocks were an evolution of a jug band, and the country/blues influence can be heard in the Grateful Dead’s music. Perhaps inevitably, with a career spanning forty years, the band had lots of members from diverse musical backgrounds, each lending a different facet to the band’s sound and approach to music They embraced many forms of music, including rock, folk, R&B, jazz and psychedelic.
Their preferred delivery method for the music was definitely live, and the band toured almost continually during the 60s and early 70s. Of their original back catalogue, their live albums outnumber their studio releases, and it was their third album, Live/Dead which they felt best captured the ‘Dead’ experience. The band made improvisation an art form and became renowned for their extensive jams, the groups fans, known as Deadheads, had a heightened appreciation of loud hair and long music.
The band have never sought out commercial success as such, though they did hit the charts in the late 80s with “Touch of Grey”. The track was supported by a video depicting the band as skeletons, which was popular on MTV and recruited a whole new generation of Deadheads.
When Jerry Garcia died in 1995, the spirit of the band died with him, and the Grateful Dead were officially over. The members of the band still tour and release tracks as part of other ventures. In 2007 the Grateful Dead were recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys.
