In this, the first disc of a mammoth undertaking, L'Arte dell'Arco set out in 1996 to record all of the violin concertos of Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770). Published between 1728 and 1732, the two books of Op.1 were originally thought to have been composed just a few years before. However, recent research has suggested that his earliest work, the Concerto in C Major, D.2 which is not on this recording, may have been written as early as 1714, moving the beginning of Tartini's fertile productivity back several years. His prodigious output spans the late Baroque to the Classical era, and his music reflects elements of both.
All but one of the 12 concertos of Op.1 follow the familiar Baroque pattern of 'fast-slow-fast'. In duple meter, the opening 'Allegros' display a broad array of textures and effects, but all demand virtuosic technique and extraordinary skill from the soloist. Often they will contrast a brief, almost choppy primary motif with the longer solo phrases in the cadenzas, which often employ double stops and extensive string crossings at high velocity. Slower and gentler, the 2nd movements exhibit an even wider range of qualities while the finales tend to be light and dancing, usually in triple meter.
Tartini seldom wrote out his solo passages, especially in these earlier compositions. Only in the 4th concerto, D.15 in D Major did he pen the actual notes for the cadenzas. In performance, Tartini would improvise the section when he played it, and the practice of allowing the individual violinist to showcase his own particular strength was common. Ornamentation and extensive decorative embellishment was typical.
The 3 violinists of the Italian based group share the spotlight as soloists, each taking the lead in 4 concertos while the remaining duo form the orchestral violin sections of the tutti. Each has distinctive individual strengths, which his playing highlights when he fronts the ensemble.
Giovanni Guglielmo, the leader of the group and the soloist for concertos 1, 4, 7, and 10, has a sparkling, energetic attack that is most effective in the faster outer movements. The wonderfully urgent ''Allegro'' of the very first Concerto, D.85 in G Minor, is a compelling example. A short, clipped, dramatically descending theme starts with the lead voice, runs through the viola and finally ends in the lower strings to set up the longer, more flowing lines of the solo cadenzas.
His brother, Federico Guglielmo, displays a smoother, more legato hand on the Concertos 2,5,8, and 11. Good examples of his elegant work can be found in the vivid opening 'Allegro' of Concerto No.2 in E Minor, D.55, in the stylish 1st movement 'Allegro' of the 5th concerto, D.58 in F Major, and the jaunty beginning of Concerto No.11 in A Major, D.88.
The third violinist is Carlo Lazari, who demonstrates a fondness for fast trills and just a hint of relaxed vibrato, which is most noticeable in more leisurely middle movements. It is in these slower sections that many critics believe that Tartini's compositions set themselves apart from other's works. And it is these cantabile movements where the aria like quality of Lazari's reading shines.
