Gerard Nieto and Reunion Three - Reunion Blues (2018)

The trio formula with piano, guitar and bass, initiated in 1940 by the Nat King Cole Trio, has had an evident continuity. There are numerous pianists who have led such formation. And this is the formula chosen by Gerard Nieto to move forward his project and record this CD, 'Reunion blues', the first record of this training, recorded at the Pau Casals Auditorium. Gerard Nieto belongs to the generation of pianists who had to fill the great gap that occurs with the disappearance of Tete Montoliu. Since then, a prominent list of quality pianists has been consolidated in Catalonia, and Gerard Nieto has been a prominent place on this list. His career as part of various formations (La Vella Dixieland, the Big Band Jazz Maresme, Shakin 'All, etc.) has been reaffirming him as one of our most outstanding representatives of piano-jazz. His latest step has been the formation of this project with two formidable musicians: guitarist Kike Angulo and bassist Pere Loewe. Kike Angulo, a thorough knowledge of the whole history of guitar-jazz, is capable of adapting in any style and provide with inspiration, creativity and good office, the most appropriate nuances to every stylistic circumstance that can be found.

Pere Loewe also has this flexibility and ability to adapt, giving priority at every moment to the rhythmic function of the double bass, which is essential in this case, given the absence of drums in the trio.

With a very pleasing repertoire, consisting mainly of standards and classics of the genre, this trio offers us a jazz that highlights what this music is fundamental, what gives its identity and what has made an estimated language in the whole world, the swing, and also the expressive resources that give the phrase of the instruments the same warmth and sensuality that characterizes afro-American vocal music.
