Libuse is The Czech national opera. It has absolutely no plot. Libuse becomes queen of the Czech lands, and then has a series of visions in which she prophesies the future glories of her people. Smetana knew when he wrote it that the opera would be reserved only for special occasions, perhaps for that reason he also lavished a tremendous amount of hard work and inspiration on it. The result is no less than spectacular, musically speaking. The title character is also one of the great roles for the female voice, and in this live recording Czech soprano Gabriela Benackova gives an absolutely thrilling performance. If the opera is an event, then so is this recording, which is as it should be. – David Hurwitz
